Radioactive Slime.

So after I got home from il Palio, (see previous post) I came home and Camille informed me that Stephanie had to go to the emergency room for appendicitis. We were really really worried of course. She stayed in the hospital that night and then had surgery the following morning.

We visited her at the hospital the next day and she was drugged up on morphine so she was slurring in her speech which was kind of funny. It wasn't funny at all to see her so helpless though, it surprised both me and Camille. We knew she was going to be very sick but I guess we just didn't expect it really... Her mom had to go home because her dad had also had surgery and she has like five or so younger brothers who needed looking after. So I stayed at the hospital over night with her.

She was sleeping pretty much the whole time. Every once and awhile she would wake up and say something funny. One time she woke up and looked at me and said "Huh?!? What?! You said what?"and I replied "I didn't say anything Stephanie...." Then she looked really confused and said "Oh... it really sounded like you said 'radioactive slime.'" Then immediately she fell asleep. I started laughing really hard and then about fifteen minutes later she woke up again and said "Whoa! Mumble mumble mumble... Spanish Fork... mumble mumble... Where did THAT come from?! mumble mumble... I.. just don't understand..." and then dropped off to sleep again. It was hilarious haha.

This morning she was a lot more coherent and we watched Anastasia (I love love love that movie) and then I went to work. She's home now, yay! Hopefully she'll start feeling better pretty soon. It was kind of scary though having one of my best friends in the hospital. I remember when Camille had appendicitis and she was only five... I guess I am the only one of us three who still has an appendix. (By the way, Stephanie is kind of like another sister to me and Camille in case you didn't know.)

Anyway, I've got to go study for finals!
Ciao!

Every time you close your eyes. Lies, lies.

The title of this post has nothing to do with what I'm going to write about but I was just listening to that song and was reminded of how much I love Arcade Fire. If you don't know what I am talking about then you should listen to this song. Anyway, it has been pretty eventful the past couple of days! I think I may need to split them up into two posts so it'll be easier to read.
So first of all, Tuesday was the last day of classes. I am so happy they are over! Now I just have finals to take and then I am done with school. Yes! It's great. Then that evening I went to BYU's first annual Il Palio. Il Palio is a horse race that is held in the "Piazza del Campo" twice a year in Siena, Italy. It is really famous and a big deal to the people there and it has been going on for hundreds of years. Each district or Contrada in Siena is represented by a certain animal. So this year BYU's Italian program decided to begin a new tradition of recreating il Palio right in the JFSB courtyard. I wasn't expecting it to be that great but I ended up having a lot of fun. We ate tons of delicious food and then listened to Vocal Point which was also better than I expected. The race was at the very end and only lasted for five minutes or so but was still fun. We had like three students from each class be runners and the rest of us cheered them on. Each class was represented by the animals that were the same as the actual Contrade. My class was Istrice which is the porcupine haha.  I thought it was a good way to end the semester and it made me realize just how much I love the Italian program at BYU even though it's not even my major. It's definitely been my favorite part of going there and I know it'll probably be the only thing I'll miss over the summer. But anyway, here are some photos:
This is part of the JFSB courtyard. I like it. :)

This is the best picture I could find of the pattern on the ground. It's based off of a real Piazza in Rome, Italy.

Oh yeah, each class received a flag that the real Contrade have. This one isn't ours but it was the closest one to me... Oh and these were taken on my phone so they're bad quality.

Okay, our flag is the second one from the left. Yes, the one you really can't see.

The people behind the bushes are the runners.

Vocal point. (Me and some others from my class got to sit in the very front).

They performed The Thriller and it was hilarious.

We were waiting for the race to start.

The water fountain was pretty...

Weekend Adventures

On Friday we had our Passover, which is something my family does every year even though we're not Jewish. We always invite different people over for it and it's always a lot of fun. This year we invited my friend, Jamie, and her family and also one of Jamie Lyn's (my older sister) friends. I was really glad we invited them because it was great. I hope they enjoyed it too. We got pretty hyper towards the end there which was kind of funny because we were laughing about some very ridiculous things... Jamie is hilarious and I am excited because she and I are going to be roommates at BYU next year and I think we'll probably laugh a lot. :)

Then on Saturday, Camille had invited her friend Sam over and so we got Stephanie and all walked down to mainstreet in Spanish Fork. Which is a pretty happening place... (Lies.) And we got yelled at by a bookstore lady and the only reason I can think of is because we were teenagers and so she immediately hated us.. Oh well... It was still a lot of fun. We sat at the park for a little bit, but I think just the walking and talking with friends was the best part. I had a really good talk with Stephanie (we couldn't really hear Camille and Sam) and it was just really nice. I did eventually get to talk to Sam a bit later in the day when we were back at home and it was nice to kind of get to know him better since I don't really know a lot of Camille's friends anymore but I hear a ton about them haha. Then me and Stephanie just went kind insane after Sam had left and Camille was out babysitting. It was really fun haha. Here are some pictures of our adventures:
These were cherry blossoms we saw while on our walk. You can't see them so well... But you can see how pretty the sky was.

Here is me and Stephanie being crazy. Stephanie's eye looks insane in this picture in my opinion....

Sam and Camille walking down mainstreet in Spanish Fork.

At the park....

Me and Stephanie being crazy again...

Camille is kind of afraid of the camera. But she is holding a handout for the Renaissance Faire which you should all go to because it's probably going to be really fun.

Anyway, that's all for now. I hope you had a great weekend as well. (Or Spring Break for those of you who are lucky like that. I am still jealous.)

Festival of Colors (Holi)

Holi, or also known as the Festival of Colors, is a Hindu festival held every spring. If you want to read about the purpose and history of the festival click here. There is a Hare Krishna temple in my little city of Spanish Fork and they hold a Holi Festival every spring right here in good old Spanish Fork. This year's was the largest Festival of Colors in the nation, there were thousands and thousands of people. In India they usually smear colors made with water or flour or something like that on each other but at this one we throw dyed cornstarch that is flower scented. I thought it smelled like Jasmine but I'm not sure. This was my first time going to this festival, though I've been to quite a few others at the Krishna temple.
We had so much fun! And as you can see from the pictures we got covered (sorry, they were taken on my phone and are pretty bad quality). I decided I am going to definitely go to it again next year.
I thought there were so many people at the first throwing of the colors but then the second one almost doubled... It was crazy that that tiny space of land could fit so many people. During the second one, my  friends and I went in the middle of the crowd and the colors were so thick in the air we could barely breathe! And then we couldn't even get out the middle because the people were just packed too tightly. It was an interesting experience haha... but I am very glad I went.
Well, that's all I have to say about it. Have a great day!

This is the last I'll ask... to meet me here at dawn.

Alright here are two things you should know about me:
1. I love Priscilla Ahn
2. I LOVE Andrew Bird.

And Matt showed me this amazing video of them doing a cover together of "Meet Me Here at Dawn" by Cass Maccombs and I am absolutely in love with it. :)

I can't even express to you the hatred I feel towards my American Heritage class right now...

But I think I will refrain from making you endure my miserable ranting. Instead, here is a list of some things that make me happy:

-Summer.
-Sunflowers.
-Fruit.
-Road trips.
-Border's hot chocolate.
-Long walks with no particular destination.
-Laughing so hard you can't breathe.
-Traveling.
-My sisters, because I think they are probably the best ones ever.
-My parents because they are also the best ones ever.
-Music.
-Chocolate.
-Turquoise.
-Pretending that I will someday have musical talent.
-My blue shoes.
-Sunny days.
-Rainy days.
-When my fingernails are painted.
-Playing at the park (especially on the swings).
-My baby cousin Sage because she is adorable.
-Simon, (the family cat) he's senile, but I love him like crazy anyway.
-Lists about things that make people happy.
-Playing around with photos even though I don't have photoshop.
-My guitar.
-My crazy friends.

I think I will end it there, but there's a lot more. :) Oh, I do kind of love the fact that I forgot today was St. Patrick's day but still managed to randomly choose my green shirt to wear. I think that may be the first time I have worn green on this holiday in many many years haha.

Anyway... have a fabulous day!

Cheeeesy story.

I've forgotten why I should be nice to people. Most of the time it doesn't seem to make any sort of difference and I usually feel embarrassed I talked to the lonely looking kid and then he seemed to not want to associate with people, or held the door open for the person who didn't say thank you, or weeded the flowerbed for my mom and she didn't even notice, or when I hugged the girl crying in the bathroom and then never spoke with her again. A lot of the time it just feels safer to pass them by and let someone else deal with it. Sometimes it feels safer to be concerned with my close friends only.

I go to a school where there are thousands of students and I don't stand out at all, I am invisible. I want to talk but I feel like I physically can't... I don't know why. It terrifies me. Though I want to be loved. I see the other students talking, hugging, laughing, telling secrets, walking to class in groups, talking to friends on cell phones... and I desperately want that. I want to belong. I want someone at that school to genuinely care about me and me to care about them. All I want is one really good friend. I come home and Camille talks about all of her friends (she is so popular haha) and now even Stephanie shares those friends with her. And I feel left out. And I get on the computer because it's the only contact I have with my old friends on a regular basis... but I have lost more than half of those people. And I rarely see the other ones.

Along with loneliness, I feel so unintelligent. I get such low scores on my tests and I am trying so hard... It's so frustrating. Everyone else seems to be able to handle it. It's just little me who can't be that smart. I have to practice speaking italian to two other girls for an hour every week and when I do, they have to correct everything I say. I know they are trying to help. But it makes me feel more stupid. It kind of feels like I am drowning... in knowledge. It's going over my head and I'm not absorbing most of it.

So today, I was feeling particularly stupid and small and unimportant and very very lonely. And I studied italian so hard last night. Then I went to my practice speaking... and I said everything wrong. And the other girls seemed to understand it so well. And I had to keep myself from bursting into tears. I managed to hold it in though until the hour was over. And as I walked through the hordes of students I started to cry but I didn't want people to see so I put my hood up and headed for the bathroom. And I knew what would happen.

So I rushed into the bathroom ready to just let the tears come and then leave like usual. But then a grad student that I sort of knew came in because she had seen me crying. And she asked if I was okay and immediately gave me a hug. Then she started telling me about how she felt exactly the same when she was in college and still does in grad school even though she is over 50 years old. She told me that school doesn't define who I am (amazingly enough she completely guessed that I was feeling this way about school) and that no one gets good grades in generals because they are really hard. And she explained that she is a good mother, a good friend, she's learned to be a nice person, and more things that are more important than her C in American Heritage and that I can do those things too and they will be much more important to me and others. And she didn't leave me until I had calmed down and stopped crying.

And I realized. What if she'd been too afraid to help me? Afraid of what I thought? Or that I wouldn't thank her? Or that I wouldn't want to talk to anyone? Then it would have been like every other lonely time crying pathetically in the bathroom. But all I needed was a hug and someone to care. And this practically complete stranger came in and treated me like I was her  friend or something even though she's way older than me. And I did feel better after that, the day got progressively better and I was just happier. She didn't change anything about me, or about my lack of friends or my grades in school. But she came and loved me when I felt like no one did. And that's all I needed to make it to the end of this awful, awful, long week. And I don't think she even knows how much that meant to me.

And so now I remember why I need to be nice to people. Even if they don't seem to appreciate it... I don't know why they are the way they are or why they act how they do. I haven't lived their life. And maybe all they need is someone to be nice to them. And that's easy, so why is it so hard? But I think it's probably more important to just love people than to be socially normal or acceptable to them or others. So now that I remember that, I want to be more aware of things like that and to help whenever I get the opportunity and to not be afraid.

It was just a nice little reminder.

Two unimportant little facts about me...

I love to wear mismatched socks on purpose

... and I really really love my blue shoes. :]
